🏞️ Join me as I conquer Colombia's iconic rock, El Peñón de Guatape, climbing over 700 steps to witness one of the country's most stunning views! This ancient monolith, over 70 million years old, offers breathtaking panoramas of Guatape's man-made hydroelectric dam, which generates 30% of Colombia’s electricity. 🎤 After that intense climb, we unwind with a peaceful boat trip across the dam, enjoying the vibrant scenery and even some spontaneous Colombian freestyle singing! 🤮 But the adventure doesn't stop there—lunch was a wild ride too! I opted for the traditional bandeja paisa, and let's just say it was a choice that left me fighting for my life for the rest of the day. 🇧🇴 Get ready to lose yourself in the largest salt flats on earth! This world’s biggest mirror goes on forever and is unlike anywhere else. Welcome to Salar de Uyuni, the Uyuni Salt Flats of Bolivia! 🌅 Join me on this unforgettable experience as we trek across the Uyuni Salt Flats of Bolivia, crossing the border to the Atacama Desert of Chile over an exhilarating 4 days. Never before have I witnessed a landscape quite like this, with 360-degree horizon-to-horizon views of pure white salt. I’ve seen some incredible sunsets in all my travels, but nothing has come close to the sunset here. 🦕 One of the exciting things about travelling to the Bolivian Salt Flats is experiencing no concept of scale or perspective. This meant we could take some fun photos to look like we were being chased by a dinosaur or being shrunk incredibly tiny! Staying in a salt hotel at -10 degrees Celsius was an adventure in itself - can you count how many layers I had to wear just so I could feel my toes? ⏸️ Let’s slow down for a minute. Take a moment to reflect with me as I get deep and personal reminiscing on the last 2.5 years of travelling when I decided to move away from the UK. I talk about the reasons why I left and how I felt leading up to moving country. What is something you’ve been brave enough to do? Is there anything else you want to be courageous for? 🦩 As the journey progressed through the desert towards Chile, we couldn’t help but feel like we were on another planet. Bright pink flamingos and chirpy chinchillas greeted us along the way, and we had the opportunity to feed them, getting up close and personal. We also climbed the heights of Isla Incahuasi, AKA Cactus Island, soaking up the incredible views of white salt all around us from the top. ❄️ It was so cold but that didn’t stop us from leaving the comforts of our car to explore the frozen lake, taking caution with every step walking over. 🌟 Welcome back to Part 2 of my Salkantay Trek adventure to the majestic Machu Picchu - one of the Seven Wonders of the World! ✨ In this episode, the journey took a challenging turn as I hurt my hand after a bad fall and didn't reach camp until after sunset. It was a tough and frustrating day, but the breathtaking starry night sky in the mountains made it all worthwhile. 🚂 The next morning, we enjoyed a short but sweet visit to a local coffee farm, where we got a taste of the rich flavours of Peruvian coffee. ☕ From there, we hiked along the train tracks from Hidroelectrica to Aguas Calientes for 11km, ready for a well-deserved feast before the big finale tomorrow. 🏞️ Finally, the moment we've all been waiting for: we made it to the legendary Machu Picchu! Nestled not too far from Salento, Colombia, lies Cocora Valley, home to the tallest palm trees in the world! In today’s backpacking adventure, we take a local Jeep to Cocora Valley and begin our hike to explore this natural wonder. But wait, it’s the rainy season! As we had perfectly planned our trip during the 2 months of the year it rains here, we couldn’t take the longer hike as it was deemed too steep and slippery in the mud. No match for my trainers, unfortunately. So we took a nice easy walk around the pristine gardens, enjoyed our packed lunch which we got from Brunch de Salento, and soaked up the scenery and fresh air. We didn’t realise how touristy and styled this place would be until we got there - with most other people wearing flowy dresses and nice outfits. Meanwhile, we were in our hiking gear ready to get down in the mud. Nevertheless, it was still a gorgeous place and I would still recommend the visit if you’re travelling in Salento, Colombia. Is the Salkantay Trek to Machu Picchu better than the Inca Trail? Is this the best trek in Peru? Celebrated by National Geographic as one of the top 20 global treks, I grasped it with both hands, excited for my second multi-day hike in South America, and my life! But it wasn’t long before the altitude sickness started to hit me. Originally having booked the 5-day trek, I got very sick and had to change to the 4-day trek to allow one extra day of rest. Determined to make the hike, I still struggled with shortness of breath and closed nasal passage as I also had a cold! Not good. Join me in this video while we hike over 2 days to Colca Canyon - the second-deepest canyon in the world! Day 1: We got picked up early from Arequipa at 3 am and got driven for 3 hours to the Condor Cross at a staggering altitude of 3630 meters where we had breakfast in -1C weather. We then spent some time gazing across the canyon spotting wild condors soaring over the mountains! We then began our descent at 8 am and had to keep a slow pace since the trek was so steep downhill. With only a 30-minute break for lunch, we arrived at our camp at sunset, hiking for a total of 9.5 hours. It was a tiring day with a couple of falls and sore feet and knees! Day 2: We were in so much pain from hiking downhill all day, so to save our feet we decided to get a mule to take us back to the top. After some hot coca tea to help with the altitude, we headed to some hot springs to help soothe our muscles - so relaxing! Further up at the peak of the volcanoes, we were greeted with some breathtaking views at 4900 meters altitude! We also saw some wild alpacas and llamas before falling asleep on the bus and arriving back in Arequipa.
